Teddy, who is the cutest character
Teddy is the only ally in the game and the Deuteragonist of Among the Sleep. He accompanies the Toddler on his journey, giving him useful hints and tips. Teddy shares the same voice actor and presumably represents the Father.
History[]
At the start of the game, it is shown that Teddy was given to the Toddler as a birthday gift. Not much is known about Teddy before he was given to the Toddler; however, due to the patches across his body it is presumed he may have been The Father's childhood toy. Teddy serves to guide the player and tends to play a guardian figure. His arm is ripped off in the ending after The Heap takes it, although it's assumed he gets it fixed in the end.
In the alternate ending, it turns out Teddy was in fact the Nightmare, who wanted to eat the Toddler. This ending was scrapped possibly due to how unrealistic it was.
In The Game[]
The game opens during the Toddler’s second birthday at the home with their mother. The celebration is interrupted by a visitor at the front door who is hidden from the Toddler, who is the father. From the game's files, the argument audio is this: "Mother: What are you doing? I told you not to come. Father: Calm down, I'm just here to deliver a present! Mother: No you will not. Please leave, now. Father: Come on, so you won't let me give it to her? Mother: NO!"
The mother returns with a gift. She carries The Toddler and the gift upstairs to the child's room. Their mother briefly opens the gift but looks at what is inside with a disdainful expression before quickly shutting the gift box. Before the present is given to the toddler, the telephone rings, and Mother leaves the Toddler in their bedroom to play alone. The gift is revealed to be a sentient teddy bear, who climbs out of the box and hides in the chest until the Toddler finds him. The bear introduces himself as Teddy. Teddy has a friendly, curious nature. After a few minutes of playing together with a music box, a stuffed pink elephant, a story book, and a toy train, they go into the closet, which turns out to be a large, dark room filled with long, dark-colored coats. Teddy says that if the Toddler gets scared in the dark, they can hug Teddy to feel more safe. Once the Toddler holds him, Teddy lights the way, acting as a flashlight.
Later, the Toddler wakes in the night to find Teddy being taken by an unseen force. The Toddler's crib overturns, and they fall on the floor. The player scrambles from the bedroom and rescues Teddy from a washing machine by unplugging it and opening the door. Teddy says that something is not right and that they have to find The Toddler's mother.
The search leads them to discover a slide that takes them to a small playhouse within a cavern that is within The Toddler's dreams. Teddy instructs the Toddler to find four memories that they shared with Mother that will lead them to her. Throughout the search, the Toddler is pursued by various monster; Teddy acts as their only ally and comfort.
After the last memory is found, Teddy and the Toddler try to go through the slide that would lead back to the playhouse, but Heap grabs onto Teddy to stop the Toddler from completing the last memory. The Toddler hangs over an abyss and Teddy's arm is ripped off from the weight of the Toddler. The Toddler then falls into a dark place lit by a series of floodlights.
After using the last memory the Toddler returns to their room. The Toddler heads downstairs to find Mother crying in the kitchen, with the damaged Teddy in one hand, and an empty wine bottle in the other, which she drops. When the Toddler attempts to retrieve Teddy, their mother pushes them away and tells The Toddler to leave her alone. She apologizes and tells her child she didn't mean to, and that it's too much. Taking their broken teddy, and hearing a knock, the Toddler goes to the door; it opens and reveals a glowing white light. The Father is heard talking to the Toddler, remarking on Teddy's broken arm, stating that he can fix him. It is implied that he gains full custody of the Toddler after the game ends.
